Old Orchard Primary School
School Wide Positive Behaviour Support

At Old Orchard Primary School, we use School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) to create a safe, respectful and positive learning environment for all students. SWPBS is a whole school approach that focuses on explicitly teaching and reinforcing positive behaviours so that students understand what is expected of them in different settings across the school.

Students are supported to develop the skills they need to be successful learners and positive members of the school community. Clear expectations, consistent routines and shared language help students feel confident and supported throughout the school day.

Students:

·         Learn and practise the school values of respect, responsibility and positive behaviour.

·         Develop an understanding of how to behave in classrooms, playgrounds and shared spaces.

·         Build social and emotional skills that support positive relationships and learning
Are recognised and acknowledged when they demonstrate positive behaviour.

Building Positive Behaviour Across the School

School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support is embedded across all areas of school life at Old Orchard Primary School. Through a whole-school learning Scope and Sequence, students are explicitly taught the behaviours that help create a safe, respectful and positive learning environment. These expectations are reinforced through classroom lessons, staff modelling, and opportunities for students to practise these behaviours in a range of settings across the school.

Students learn the importance of showing respect for themselves, others and their learning, and are acknowledged when they demonstrate these behaviours. By using consistent language and expectations across classrooms and playgrounds, SWPBS helps create a predictable environment where students feel safe, supported and ready to learn.

Our positive behaviour approach also supports students in developing important social and emotional skills, strengthening relationships and helping them become kind, responsible members of the school community.

What SWPBS Looks Like for Students

Students at Old Orchard Primary School are explicitly taught what positive behaviour looks like in different settings across the school, including classrooms, playgrounds and shared learning spaces. Teachers model and practise these expectations with students so they understand how to demonstrate respect, responsibility and care for others. Clear routines and consistent language help students feel confident about what is expected and support them to make positive choices throughout the school day.

Recognising Positive Behaviour
Positive behaviour is acknowledged and celebrated across the school. Students receive recognition when they demonstrate the school values through their actions, effort and participation. This may include verbal praise or our school-wide acknowledgement system, ClassDojo. Celebrating positive behaviour helps reinforce expectations and encourages students to take pride in their actions and contributions to the school community.

Each term, the school also works towards a whole-school positive behaviour goal. Students earn Pears when they demonstrate our school values and positive behaviours across classrooms, playgrounds and specialist areas. These Pears contribute towards a collective school target. When the goal is achieved by the end of the term, the reward is enjoyed by all students, celebrating the shared effort of the whole school community in working together to create a positive and respectful environment.

Wellbeing Days

Each term, Old Orchard Primary School also celebrates a whole-school wellbeing day that focuses on important themes connected to inclusion, respect and community. In recent years these have included Harmony Day in Term 1, NAIDOC Week in Term 2, R U OK? Day in Term 3 and the International Day of People with Disabilities in Term 4. These days provide valuable opportunities for students to learn about diversity, kindness and understanding through whole-school activities. Community members are often invited to share their experiences and perspectives, helping students develop empathy, awareness and a deeper understanding of the world around them.

Working Together with Families

A strong partnership between school and home helps reinforce positive behaviour and wellbeing. Families are encouraged to support the school’s approach by using similar language around respect, responsibility and positive choices. By working together, staff and families help create a consistent and supportive environment where students feel encouraged to learn, build relationships and develop confidence both at school and at home.
