Mental Health and Wellbeing

The Mental Health and Wellbeing program at Old Orchard Primary School supports students in developing the social and emotional skills they need to feel safe, confident, and ready to learn. The Mental Health and Wellbeing Leader (Adam Todd) works closely with students, staff and families to create a positive and supportive school environment where every child feels connected and valued.

Students are supported through a range of proactive wellbeing initiatives that help build resilience, strengthen friendships and develop strategies for managing emotions and challenges.

Students:

·       Develop social and emotional skills such as recognising emotions, building friendships and problem solving.

·       Participate in small group sessions that support social skills, emotional regulation and confidence.

·       Have access to daily lunchtime clubs during each break, providing structured opportunities to connect with others and participate in enjoyable activities.

·       Can visit the roving Wellbeing Wagon during break times, where games and activities support positive engagement and inclusive play.

·       May spend time with Ginger, our school therapy dog, who supports students to feel calm, regulated and connected.

·       Are supported through collaboration between the Mental Health and Wellbeing Leader, teachers and families to identify needs and provide appropriate support.

A key part of the Mental Health and Wellbeing Leader role is also to support a consistent whole-school approach to wellbeing. This includes working with staff and the wider school community to develop shared language and consistent strategies around mental health and wellbeing, helping students experience the same supportive messages and approaches across classrooms, the playground and at home.

Students may also access the Wellbeing Room during learning time when additional support is needed to help them regulate and re-engage with learning. This space provides a calm, supportive environment where students can use strategies such as quiet activities, sensory tools or short breaks to manage emotions and refocus. The aim is to support students in returning to the classroom, ready to participate positively in their learning.

The Mental Health and Wellbeing Leader also works with teachers and families to develop clear referral pathways when additional support may be needed. This may include connecting students and families with school-based supports or external services. At Old Orchard Primary School, wellbeing is seen as an essential foundation for learning. Our aim is to create a safe and caring environment where all students are supported to thrive both socially and academically.
