ENGLISH

Our English program is grounded in evidence-based practices to ensure all students develop strong literacy skills.

Our teaching follows an evidence-based instructional model, with a strong focus on explicit instruction. Teachers provide clear explanations, model examples, and scaffold learning to build student confidence and independence. This approach ensures that all students are supported to achieve success at their point of need.

In Prep to Year 2, we implement a structured synthetic phonics approach using Little Learners Love Literacy. Students participate in daily, explicit phonics instruction, where teachers clearly model and guide learning to support the development of essential reading and spelling skills. In Prep to Year 2, students engage in daily literacy blocks that include phonics, reading, and writing. These sessions are complemented by weekly handwriting lessons to support correct letter formation and presentation skills.

Students in Prep to Year 2 take home decodable texts that are carefully aligned with our phonics program to reinforce classroom learning and develop reading fluency and confidence. We also have an extensive and well-resourced school library, where students from Prep to Year 6 borrow books each week. Managed by our specialist librarian, the library is a welcoming and engaging space that is loved by our students and fosters a strong culture of reading across the school.

In Years 3-6, students participate in daily reading and writing lessons, with explicit spelling (word study) taught three times a week. Consistent with our Prep-Year 2 approach, lessons are grounded in explicit teaching practice. Our reading program is based on the Big Six framework, supporting the development of key comprehension and fluency skills. Students also work on a Writer’s Gift throughout the year. This is a folio of published writing pieces that showcases their growth, creativity, and ability to write for a range of purposes and audiences.
